Home renovation is a big decision that requires careful consideration, especially when it comes to the type of renovation you choose. Renovations can be divided into two categories: those that you need and those that you want. Just like in life, there are things that we need, such as air, and things that we want, such as a chocolate cake. While we might be tempted to choose the chocolate cake over the air, we know that we'll eventually regret it. Similarly, when it comes to home renovations, we need to carefully consider our options and choose wisely.

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines "to renovate" as restoring something to a former better state or reviving it. While both definitions are important, one is more relevant when it comes to home renovations and how we spend our budget.

Renovations that brighten up our living space, provide more room, or increase our comfort level fall into the second category of restoring life to our home. These types of renovations are the ones that have the "wow" factor and that we love to show off to our friends and family. They can also add value to the price of our home, and people often consider the return on investment when choosing a renovation. For example, adding an extra bathroom or updating the kitchen can significantly increase the value of a house.

On the other hand, there are renovations that we need to do to maintain our home's structural integrity or fix existing issues. These types of renovations fall into the first category of restoring something to a former better state. Examples include fixing a leaky roof, repairing a cracked foundation, or replacing old plumbing. While these renovations may not have the same visual appeal as the second category, they are just as important for the longevity and safety of our homes.
